WEEK 7

ACTIVITY ON 20/5/10

CymCAP Simulation

- this software was used to design a cable...when it come to modeling, simulation will be the most powerfull...people will do the simulation before do the exact model
- we can test the designed cable in simulation as we test at site...more less like pre-testing.
- the simulation result will help us to plan the work and stand by with any consequences...

ACTIVITY ON 17/5/10

DISCUSSION WITH DR. BASRI

2 main things :-

(1) How to measure capacitance of cable

other than capacitance all can be measured using instrument but not for capacitance of cable...than how ?? back to basic, we use formula in order to determine the capacitance value..BUT don't forget sometime manual calculation will effect by human error..furthermore, using formula, the result not really accurate because there is semiconductor inside the cable (due to C=permitivity.A / d)...but how we going to calculate if the value of relative permitivity are not given ???

dont stress...we have the 2nd option... we may use another formula as well which is Z = ( R^2 + Xc ^2 )^1/2 ....from the formula, we can conclude that Xc always frequency dependent (due to Xc = 1/WC ; w=2piF)

(2) Cable connection (star/delta)

Cable 11kV :
- delta connected
- no earth, no neutral
- current balance, voltage imbalance
- however, 11kV always balance

Cable 33kV:
- star connected
- consists of neutral point
- current always imbalance, voltage balance

Cable 415V:
- star connected

last few semester, during Power System I lecture (taught by Mr. John Steven) he had explained about transpose (can remember what chapter)....on site, the technician did mention about cross bonding..it's purpose is to neutral all the voltage at the joint before we take any further action..usually they did cross bonding before they do PD testing...after that i attended a talk..one of the speaker did showed us the diagram of cross bonding and transpose...what across in my mind at that time was " i have seen the diagram during m Power Sys I "...what question me just what is their different???

what differentiate them is just where we implement it...

- for cross bonding we used it for sheath cable (recommended)
- for transpose we used it for cable core

* in Malaysia, we didn't do transpose because it is difficult and expensive as well

IT'S MY TURN NOW!!!

ACTIVITY ON 12/5/10

for the first time i had a chance to do all this...thanks to En. saiedin n Khairool for giving me a chance to experience this...this week cable lab kind of hectic because two test ongoing at the same time...furthermore not many technician available at the lab because this week got one team of PD testing need to go to Pasir Gudang for a week..since the staff not enough, so this is the right time for me as practical student to help them and gain experiences...

what am i doing???

take the temperature reading

inject/drop the current (0 - 420A)

ACTIVITY ON 11/5/10

last few week, i attended a course bout all the testing procedure...one of the topic was how to measure contact resistance (CR)...so today, en. Saeidin ask me to do all the procedure required...

connecting the sensor with the CR

set the inject current (60A) - this tool quite heavy =D

waiting for the reading

print out the result

evaluate the CR base on the result

TNBR MONTHLY INTELLECTUAL DISCOURSE

- cross

FIRST SITE VISIT @ PULAU BANDING

ACTIVITY ON 25/4/10

* i forgot to publish this entry...this should be before the Pulau Banding 1...sorry for the inconvenience....

going for a site visit with authorise person form TNBD Ipoh, foreman Shamsul and En. Faris...

went to the site before take any further action...the location is base on the report provided by TNBD Ipoh... ( Location : BS-BG 76)

*Thermography Analysis*

according to contractor, base on their inspection..they found hot spot at overhead line...how they capture the hot spot??? picture above, somthing like camera hold by En. Faris was used to determine the hot spot location... however, hot spot cannot be seen (not really clear) on bright day...

this is the location of hot spot...they did the analysis at night...the joint was on a tray at the pole

this is the scanned picture...above this was the original firgure and this is the result they get and evaluate the level of hot sopt base on the temperature...different location will have different temperatute...as u can see in the picture...the 20 degree C was the references temperature at that surrounding..if there is a spot with temperature high than its references temperature, they will clarify it as hot spot...

short discussion with the boss about what we should do when we come back later....

discussion with foreman Shamsul n En. Faris on how and where to install the energy logger... our first choice to install is at termination.. but since at termination required a shutdowm, it give us a bit problem in order for us to do our job tomorrow..to arrange a shutdown TNB need at least a week to arrange it..they need to give a notice to residences, premise, resort and etc to inform them about the shutdown... if fail to do so, after 10min (usually) of shutdown, TNB will recieve a lots of phone call... =D

Pulau Banding II

ACTIVITY ON 7/5/10 - 8/5/10

This is my 3rd time at Pulau Banding....this time, the purpose still the same..install the same equipment...measure the same thing...expect to have the pattern of current as theory...the only different from previous, this time we install at termination...

why we dont install at termination before???

oraite...like this...we all experienced the blackout nite...sleep without fan/air-con...for sure u will mad because no electricity all of sudden...so that, in order to avoid customer unsatisfied..we should give them a notice in order to do the shutdown.....

at termination..we need to shutdown fisrt before we can touch the joint...if there is still voltage up there n u touch it...in few second u will 'goal'....so that shutdown is the solution to avoid any death....

how to check whether the voltage/current zero or not???

as u can see...there is a rod hanging up there...the yellow rod is known as discharge rod....the rod can ensure all the voltage/current have been discharge complete or not...and after that we can touch the termination safely...

complete installation at termination

checking the load for tonight....to check whether it's balance or not...reading taken at SSU Bersia

comparing the result between TNBD Ipoh' s 'tong' with TNBR's 'tong'
* tong is the name of the device that display the reading above

this is the source center that supply current all the way from Bersia to Banding

CBM course

ACTIVITY ON : 4/5/10 - 6/5/10

CBM Course @ TNB Intergrated Learning Solution Sdn. Bhd. (ILSAS)

lecture class

course manual

course participant

En. Razlan give some explainsion about STRESS TEST

En. Khairul explain about Insulation Resistance (IR) using Meggar

IR Measurement

Partial Discharge set up (PD Testing)

Listen to the explainasion about PD testing

En. Razlan show us how to use TDR - Time Domain Reflectometry

week 4 : Pulau banding I

ACTIVITY ON 26/4/10 - 30/4/10

last sunday, we had a site visit... actually the actual date for us to do the installation is on week 5 but since there is certain reason we need to bring forward the date...

DAY 1 : 26/4/10 (travelling day)

DAY 2 : 27/4/10

9.30 - breakfast

10.00 - drive to the site (pole 102, 90, 88)

10.40 - reset Current Transformer / energy logger (at site)

11.15 - install energy logger at straight trough joint (on the tray at the top of pole)

complete installation for the 1st day

Reset the energy logger - before we install it at the overhead line, the setting of the equipment should be done manually. the data logger will be leave at the top of pole for the straight 12 hours.

" ku sangka panas sampai ke petang , rupanya hujan di tongah hari ".... after the rain has stopped, we plan to continue the job but the above incident happened when ' uncle .... ' try to adjust the crane hogger and put it at the right position. well, nothing we can do unless wait for the help of another crane to pull i out. after an hour then we can proceed the job.

those two pictures above are taken during the installation process..according to En. Saeidin, this work are done 7m from the land. the person who is responsible to do this must know the theory behind it as well, its not simply go up there and plug in the device. ie; the person should now the basic idea about eletcric. however, this activity was supervised by the TNBR's foreman from cable unit.

DAY 3 : 28/4/10

Day by day, new thing pop up...for today after uninstall the energy logger, we have to transfer the collected data into the software in order for us to see the patern of current flow during peak hour and ordinary hour.
the lady in blue jacket was my sub-supevisor...she was one of the engineer in High Voltage Diagnostic unit...at this moment we all quite stress when the data we get not as what we expected...discussion still ongoing eventhough we sat next to the main road...
"Poning Eden ngan data nie" <<< en. saeidin ^_^

dangerous just next to me... " malang tak berbau "...
communicate with teamate up there...

TNBR joinventure with TNBD Kuala Kangsar

Praise to God... we have a good coorperation with them in order for us to use the crane hogger...wothout their help, for sure we cannot reach the top pole

This is a straight through joint...view from top
the cable on the tray was the joint cable and the energy logger was installed here..

WRONG!!!!
the cable shoudn't be hang up just like that...every single joint MUST place on the tray

CORRECT!!!

its me!!!.. i was given an opportunity to experience it... ^_^

the diagram shown the route from SSU Bersia to PPU Tasik Banding
the red dot indicates very seroius condition..if late action, it will explode.
DAY 4 : 29/4/10

same like yesterday and the day before... set up the energy logger

installation work
" walaupon gayat...he willing to go up there...tanggungjawab bertugas kan... =p "

this not facbooking k...this is double checking eventhough evrything was set up just now

DAY 5 : 30 /4/10

9.30 - breakfast
10.55 - uninstall the energy logger
11.30 - travelling back to TNBR
5.30 - arrive at TNBR
